Perhaps one of the most beloved and well-known rancheras of all time, "El Rey" was originally composed by Mexican singer-songwriter José Alfredo Jiménez in 1971. Written from the perspective of a man who, despite leading a tempestuous life, is convinced he's still the best among his peers, "El Rey" finally reached Number 1 on the Mexican charts in 1974, a year after José Alfredo Jiménez's death from hepatitis in 1973. That same year, the iconic singer and actor Vicente Fernández paid tribute to Jiménez by covering the song, turning it into an international hit that reached Number 40 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart. From there on, "El Rey" became a staple of Vicente Fernández's repertoire, who first released it as a single and then included it in his 1974 album El Ídolo de México. In the following years, "El Rey" received the cover treatment by María Dolores Pradera, Luis Miguel, and Plácido Domingo, and was inducted to the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.
