After his 1994 self-titled studio debut failed to meet the expectations of his label LaFace Records, American R&B crooner Usher Raymond IV (simply known as Usher) spent the next few years participating in talent shows and honing his songwriting skills. Released in 1997, his second album My Way showcased a more seasoned performer ready to steal the spotlight as he approached his artistic peak. Thanks to hit singles like the title track, "You Make Me Wanna...," and "Nice & Slow," My Way claimed the top spot of the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for three consecutive weeks and peaked at Number 4 on the Billboard 200, becoming Usher's breakthrough album. Even though it wasn't released as an official single, the LP also included a cover of Midnight Star's 1983 deep cut "Slow Jam," which was co-written by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, one of My Way's producers. Usher's version of "Slow Jam" features R&B singer Monica.
