The swamp rock masterpiece "Drift Away" was written by producer and songwriter Mentor Williams in 1973 and became a breakthrough hit for soul singer Dobie Gray that year, hitting the highs of international fame. Nearly four decades later, Dobie Gray partnered with country-rock upstart Uncle Kracker who sings the bridge, joint final verse and provided backing vocals for this duet version of the song. The new rendition also became a hit, cracking the US Billboard Top 10 in 2003 and staying faithful to the original, which is propelled by that unforgettable, lighters-in-the-air chorus: "Give me the beat, boys and free my soul / I wanna get lost in your rock and roll / And drift away”. Uncle Kracker—who had scored his first worldwide hit with "Follow Me" in November 2000—included the cover of "Drift Away" on his second studio album, No Stranger to Shame, which was released in 2002 and later certified gold by the RIAA.
