In 2011, Kentucky country-folk star Tyler Childers was only just starting to sow the seeds of his talked-about career with the release of debut LP Bottles and Bibles. On this heartbreaking album standout "Coal," he pays homage to his Appalachian background to tell the tale of a man in a coal mine in West Van Lear, where the work is "darker than a dungeon" and "deeper than a well" and the people "live off bread" and hope. After following up the album with a breakthrough release in 2017's Purgatory, Tyler Childers built on the rawness and authenticity of Bottles and Bibles to create protest albums about racial injustice (2020's Long Violent History), raise support for underserved communities in the Appalachian region, and celebrate queer Appalachian working-class love (2023 single "In Your Love"). In 2019, he was nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.
