"Don't Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream)" is a song recorded by the R&B horn band Tower of Power. The band started in the Oakland, California area and this song comes from their 1974 album Back to Oakland. The band went through several singers but this song and many of their biggest hits were sung by Lenny Williams, who also co-wrote the song. Don’t Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream) is about trying to convince a lover that it's not the right time to give up on their relationship. The song's title is a takeoff of a saying first attributed to President Abraham Lincoln who said "It is not a good thing to swap horses while crossing a stream" in an 1864 speech. In the context of the song, the singer is saying it makes more sense to work on their relationship than to jump into another one.
The backing track for "Don't Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream)" is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
