"I Can't Stand the Rain" was originally co-written and recorded by Memphis soul titan Ann Peebles in 1973, whose version famously commandeered the electric timbale to cleverly recreate the plopping sound of raindrops. The beloved hit, which was taken on by the late Tina Turner in 1984, isn't simply about a woman who can't stand the rain. She can't stand the rain because it reminds her of her former lover. "Hey, window pane / Do you remember / How sweet it used to be? / When we was together," she sings in her dynamic full-throttle vocal, sounding at once vulnerable and powerful. Tina Turner, who passed away on 24 May 2023, included her rendition of "I Can't Stand the Rain" on her career-defining 1984 album Private Dancer and is synonymous with the 1985 single, which found great success in Europe. A disco reimagining of "I Can't Stand the Rain" by UK-based R&B group Eruption hit the shelves in 1978.
