Before Canadian singer The Weeknd was singing about “Blinding Lights,” he made his debut onto the music scene with 2011’s “Wicked Games.” It was written by The Weeknd in collaboration with producers Doc McKinney and Illangelo, who also performed all the instrumentation on the studio track. The song’s lyrics explore the topic of drug abuse. It was originally recorded as part of The Weeknd’s 2011 mixtape House of Balloons, but the acclaim it received led to its release as the lead single for his 2012 album Trilogy. “Wicked Games” earned widespread critical praise, and was similarly commercially successful; the song was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipments of over 1,000,000 units in the United States. Additionally, the song was included on the soundtrack for the film Southpaw. Eminem, who was the executive producer of the Southpaw soundtrack, would go on to produce a remix with The Weeknd on his track “The Hills.”
