The doo-wop-inflected country classic "My Special Angel" was penned by singer-songwriter Bobby Duncan and first recorded by Bobby Helms in 1957. Over a decade later, the song experienced a surge in popularity after American vocal rock and roll group The Vogues recorded a version for their 1968 third studio album, Turn Around, Look at Me. In its lyrics, the narrator praises their lover's beauty and character, comparing them to an angel. Featuring the group's lush vocal harmonies and a much more polished sound than the original, The Vogues' rendition proved extremely successful, topping the Adult Contemporary chart and peaking at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Turn Around, Look at Me, which was also the group's debut for major label Reprise Records, reached number 29 on the Billboard 200.
