In 1970, 17-year-old David Milgaard was wrongfully convicted of raping and murdering nursing student Gail Miller and sent to one of Canada's toughest prisons where he served 23 years behind bars before he was released in 1992 and fully exonerated by DNA evidence in 1997. Canadian rockers The Tragically Hip, who formed in 1984 and disbanded in 2017 following the death of band member Gord Downie, tell the story of David Milgaard on their 1992 song Wheat Kings," which was featured on their third studio album, Fully Completely, although not released as a single. The album, which generated six singles in "Locked in the Trunk of a Car," "Fifty Mission Cap," "Courage (For Hugh MacLennan)," "At the Hundredth Meridian "Looking for a Place to Happen," and "Fully Completely," later won the public vote for the Heritage Prize in the 1986-1995 category at the 2017 Polaris Music Prize.
