"Stop! In the Name of Love" is a song by American female vocal group The Supremes, included in their sixth album More Hits by The Supremes (1965). Written by the Motown songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland, the song was released as a single in February 1965 and quickly made its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, also reaching Number 2 on the R&B charts. A story about a woman urging her man to quit cheating on her, "Stop! In the Name of Love" was inspired by an argument between Lamont Dozier and his girlfriend at the time. It was also nominated for Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Group Vocal Performance at the 1966 Grammy Awards, but lost to the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall." Soon enough, "Stop! In the Name of Love" became an essential part of The Supremes' live repertoire and was usually accompanied by the now-iconic "talk to the hand" choreography. In the years that followed, the crossover hit was covered by numerous artists, including The Hollies, La Toya Jackson, and Japanese dance-pop group Globe.
