Led by soul singer Russell Thompkins Jr. and his distinctive falsetto, Philadelphia-based R&B combo The Stylistics hit their stride in the early 1970s with a string of hit singles for the Avco Records label that enjoyed great popularity in both the US and Europe. By 1974, the band had already severed ties with Thom Bell, the producer behind some of their biggest hits, and began working with label owners Hugo & Luigi and arranger Van McCoy on the follow-up to their third hit-packed album, Rockin' Roll Baby. Recorded at Mediasound Studios in New York City, Let's Put It All Together was officially released in May 1974 and quickly became their highest-charting effort on the US pop charts, reaching Number 14 on the Billboard 200. This success was largely thanks to singles like "You Make Me Feel Brand New" and the title track, a romantic soul ballad that peaked at Number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number 9 on the Official UK Singles Chart. Written by Hugo & Luigi and George David Weiss, "Let's Put It All Together" was The Stylistics' last crossover hit single in the United States.
