In this dark and grim cautionary tale, a wayward man reflects on his decision to follow his heart to Alabama. "Never would've hitchhiked to Birmingham / If it hadn't been for love / Never would've caught the train to Louisiana / If it hadn't been for love," he begins. Something went awry along the way, as he has ended up behind bars: "Four cold walls against my will / At least I know she's lying still / Four cold walls without parole / Lord have mercy on my soul." "If It Hadn't Been for Love" was released on The Steeldrivers' self-titled 2008 debut album. This haunting bluesy lament is carried by the sheer power of Chris Stapleton's voice which helped pave the way for a number 57 position on the US Billboard Top Country Albums chart. LP track "Blue Side of the Mountain" also earned the bluegrass group a Grammy nomination in 2009 for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
