"More Than a Name on a Wall" was written by Jimmy Fortune and John Rimel to pay tribute to members of the US armed forces who served in the Vietnam War, taking inspiration from The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, which was completed in 1982. Erstwhile country and gospel outfit The Statler Brothers, comprising Jimmy Fortune – who replaced tenor and guitarist Lew DeWitt in 1982 who was forced to leave the group due to ill health from Crohn's disease – among other vocalists and musicians with southern gospel roots, recorded the song in April 1989. "More Than a Name on a Wall" – which followed a successful run of releases, from their second chart-topper and Elizabeth Taylor homage, "Elizabeth" to subsequent number ones "My Only Love" and "Too Much on My Heart" – was released as the third single from their Greatest Hits compilation album and reached number six on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1989.
