"Edelweiss" is a song from the 1959 musical The Sound of Music. Written by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein, it was the last song composed for the musical. They already had "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and the rousing title track, but Rogers felt the patriarch Captain von Trapp needed a song that could act as his farewell to Austria, his homeland. The edelweiss is a flower so loved in Austria that it's illegal to pick. The song is written in 3/4, or waltz time, giving the composition the feel of an old Austrian folk song. Many people thought it was! The same thing happened with their song "Ol' Man River" from Showboat. People were convinced the song was an authentic African American spiritual. Rogers and Hammerstein are responsible for many of Broadways most popular musicals, including Oklahoma, The King and I, South Pacific, and Carousel.
