"Love in Vain" is a song recorded by The Rolling Stone for their album Let it Bleed. The song was written and originally recorded by American blues artist Robert Johnson in 1937. It's the only song on the album not written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Lyrically, the song is about losing someone you love. "Well I followed her to the station / With a suitcase in my hand / Whoa, it's hard to tell, it's hard to tell / When all your love's in vain." After the Stones covered the song in 1971, questions about the song's copyright came up. As with many blues songs, words and chord progressions are often passed around among musicians. It was clear that Johnson had borrowed some things from other songs but after sorting through it all in court, full copyright was awarded to his estate. Both Jagger and Richards loved the song. Richards added a few chords and took it in a slightly country direction for their version.
