A driving rock 'n' roller written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, The Rolling Stones' "All Down the Line" is featured on the band's classic 1972 album Exile on Main St and narrowly missed out on being the LP's lead single, instead becoming the B-side of "Happy." Showcasing a cavalcade of musicians, including Nicky Hopkins on piano, Bobby Keys on saxophone, Jim Price on trumpet and trombone and Jimmy Miller on maracas, "All Down the Line" is widely considered to be one of The Rolling Stone's best tunes. The song, which was first conceived as an acoustic version in 1969 before going electric in 1971, weaves in a train metaphor ("Yeah, heard the diesel drumming all down the line / Oh, heard the wires-a-humming all down the line / Yeah, hear the women sighing all down the line / Oh, hear the children crying all down the line") while also slyly slipping in references to religion ("I need a sanctified girl with a sanctified mind to help me now.")
