By 1996, Anglo-Irish Celtic punk band The Pogues were on the verge of collapse. After pretty much carving a niche for themselves with their groundbreaking mixture of punk rock and traditional Irish folk music during the 1980s, the band entered the new decade with more doubts than certainties. Following the release of their 1990 album Hell's Ditch, which found the group steering away from their signature style, frontman Shane MacGowan had to abandon the band due to his worsening alcohol addiction. His spot was filled first by The Clash's Joe Strummer and then by Spider Stacy, who sang lead vocals on the albums Waiting for Herb (1993) and Pogues Mahone (1996). The latter included the song "Love You 'Till the End," an acoustic ballad written by bassist Darryl Hunt that showcased the group's softer, more delicate side. Shortly after the album's release, The Pogues called it quits altogether, only to reform once again in 2001.
