“Fairytale of New York,” a song by Celtic punk band The Pogues, is an unlikely Christmas classic. Filled with bitter lyrics about frustrations and regrets, with two deeply embittered people trading barbs over the sound of Christmas caroling in the background. The song was written by Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan. It was produced by Steve Lilywhite. The song features guest vocals from Kirsty MacColl, who sings the female part of the duet. The song was released as a single in the United Kingdom and Ireland in November 1987 and was included on The Pogues' album If I Should Fall from Grace with God (1988). It was a hit, peaking at Number 1 in the UK and becoming one of The Pogues' best-known songs. It has since become a holiday classic and has been covered by several other artists. “Fairytale of New York" is known for its mix of Irish folk influences, rock instrumentation, and evocative lyrics.
