"A Rainy Night in Soho" is a song by Irish Celtic rock act The Pogues, released as part of their 1986 EP, Poguetry in Motion. It was written by lead singer Shane McGowan and produced by Elvis Costello. Its lyrics, which on the surface hint at a love song, feature several double entendres that could lead to believe the protagonist is actually talking about his alcohol addiction. The song's recording process was marked by a notable disagreement between Shane MacGowan and Elvis Costello over the instrumentation. The vocalist championed the inclusion of a flugelhorn, a trumpet-like instrument, while the producer preferred an oboe. Shane MacGowan's preference prevailed in the original English release featuring the flugelhorn, while the American and Canadian versions highlighted the oboe. In 1991, a third version emerged, remixed by Steve Lillywhite, blending elements of both the oboe and flugelhorn. In 1992, Nick Cave, an ardent admirer of Shane MacGowan, recorded his rendition of the song, releasing it as a B-side.
