Pop-soul diamond "Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet, Tender, Love)" was a chart-topping hit for vocal trio The O'Jays in 1976, and came from the genius of Philly soul pioneers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff aka Gamble and Huff, who both wrote and produced the song. The O'Jays tease out the track's uplifting melody through lush harmonies and impressive solo runs that bring its gushing, uber-romantic declarations to life; "Ooh, you're my darlin', darlin' baby / You're my sweet and tender love / You're a very special lady / I said you're everything I ever hoped for in a woman / And as long as we may live". "Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet, Tender, Love)" is a '70s soul stunner of the highest order and gave The O'Jays their second R&B Number one following "Message in Our Music," which was also released in 1976 on the group's album Message in the Music. This LP is significant in being the last O'Jays record to feature vocals from original group member William Powell, who sadly died from cancer, aged 35, in May 1977.
