This early 1980s new wave anthem doubles up as an allusion to one of New York City's most iconic subway lines, the L—which connects Manhattan to Brooklyn—as well as comprising clever wordplay that forms the song's simple yet mountain-sized hook: "Take the L out of lover and it's over". "Take the L" charts the crushing defeat of a romantic breakup where the protagonist would "do anything" to make their lover stay. Written by Marty Jourard, Martha Davis and Carter, and produced by Val Garay, "Take the L"—a blustering blend of pop finesse and rock guitars—was released by Berkeley, Californian band The Motels as the second single from their third studio album All Four One and settled at number 52 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The track is also one of the best-known gems from the group's back catalogue, along with hits "Only the Lonely"—also featured on the LP All Four One—and "Suddenly Last Summer."
