Earning their Four Kings of Harmony title through sheer talent, The Mills Brothers took America by storm in the 1930s, becoming the first African-American artists to score their own show on national network radio (CBS), selling over 50 million records and later inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. "Glow Worm" was originally composed in 1902 by Paul Lincke, with German lyrics by Heinz Bolten-Backers and translated by Lilla Cayley Robinson, and later put through the wringer by American lyricist, the maestro Johnny Mercer. The Mills Brothers' version of "Glow Worm" wriggled its way into the national consciousness in 1952 and leaped to the top of the charts that December. This was in spite of the recording's unfashionable, Glenn Miller-esque swing band sound which was palpably out of step with the rock 'n' roll fervor that had begun to take hold of America. Nevertheless, "Glow-Worm" went to number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox chart as well as giving The Mills Brothers a top ten hit in the UK.
