It was written by the famous songwriting and production duo Gamble & Huff, known for their work with artists such as The O'Jays and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. The song was produced by Gamble and Huff and recorded at their Philadelphia International Records studios. It was released as a promotional single for The Intruders' fourth studio album Save the Children (1973). “I Wanna Know Your Name” features a smooth, soulful sound with a prominent horn section and lush string arrangement, courtesy of Philadelphia International's in-house band, MFSB. The song peaked at Number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and Number 9 on the US R&B chart, becoming one of The Intruders' best-known songs. It has since been covered by several other artists and has become a classic of the Philadelphia soul genre.
