The country music supergroup The Highwaymen, made up of some of the genre’s most respected performers such as Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson, made a splash onto the country music scene with their first album, 1985's Highwayman. The album contains songs that went on to become radio smash hits as well as country gems like "Against the Wind," "Jim, I Wore a Tie Today," and "Big River." One of the album’s tracks is “The Last Cowboy Song,” a song originally written by Ed Bruce and Ron Peterson. Featuring vocals from all four members of The Highwaymen, "The Last Cowboy Song" is both a celebration of the cowboy lifestyle and a eulogy for the disappearing American Old West values that were often associated with the archetype of the cowboy. Shortly after its release, its parent album Highwayman peaked at Number 1 on the US Top Country Albums chart, and Number 92 on the US Billboard 200.
