The "golden era" of the Doo-Wop genre in the post-World War II period spawned many enduring classics, one of which is the song "Whispering Bells" by The Del Vikings. Known for their harmonious stylings, the group landed a major hit when they released the song in 1957, as it showcased their vocal talents and charismatic appeal. "Whispering Bells" was written by Fred Lowery along with Clarence Quick, the bass vocalist for The Del Vikings. An upbeat song with prominent vocal harmonies, the song exhibits many of the hallmarks now associated with the Doo-Wop genre: ornate vocal arrangements, heartfelt emotion, a strongly melodic composition, and of course, the "nonsense syllables" providing a rhythmic foundation. "Whispering Bells" charted impressively upon its release, reaching Number 5 on the US R&B chart and Number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Del Vikings recording of "Whispering Bells" is considered an absolute classic of the genre and has appeared in films such as the iconic Stand By Me (1986).
