Borrowing its title from the English children's novel of the same name, The Cure's "Charlotte Sometimes" was released as a non-album single on October 9, 1981. It was written by Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, and Lol Tolhurst, and produced by The Cure with Mike Hedges, who had previously worked with the band on their 1981 critically acclaimed album, Faith. The song explores themes of identity and time travelling, often mirroring lines from the book in its lyrics. Stylistically speaking, "Charlotte Sometimes" continues in the same vein as The Cure's previous studio albums, evoking feelings of alienation and despair through atmospheric instrumentals rooted in gothic rock and post-punk. Shortly after its release, the song reached Number 44 on the UK Singles Chart and peaked at Number 31 in New Zealand. In 1984, Robert Smith cited it as one of the best singles The Cure has ever recorded. Even though it was originally released as a standalone single, "Charlotte Sometimes" was later included in Faith's 2005 reissue as well as in several compilations.
