"My daddy was a bankrobber / But he never hurt nobody / He just loved to live that way / And he loved to steal your money," so begins this dub-infused portrait of an outlaw on the run. "Bankrobber" encapsulates the heady cross-cultural mix that defined The Clash's trailblazing sound, where reggae, punk, funk, and rockabilly all took turns at the wheel. Recorded in 1980, "Bankrobber" was not only the band's first studio meeting with the legendary future Sandinista! producer Mikey Dread, but also marked a departure from the more straight-up punk of their era-defining 1977 debut. Accompanied by an iconic Don Letts-directed video, which featured mask robbers in line with its subject matter, the reggae track was a standalone single release that became one of The Clash's best-known songs, reaching number 12 on the UK Singles Chart and stopping at number 14 on both the Irish Singles Chart and the New Zealand Singles Chart.
