The Carpenters beautifully capture the deep sense of hopelessness and despair that comes with the end of a relationship on their version of Skeeter Davis's goosebump-inducing lonesome country heartbreaker, "The End of the World." "Why does the sun go on shining? / Why does the sea rush to shore?" asks Karen Carpenter on the duo's cover of the country-pop song written by composer Arthur Kent and lyricist Sylvia Dee, and originally released by Skeeter Davis in 1962. Her original made it into the top five on four different charts, including number two on the Billboard Hot 100, while The Carpenters – who recorded their take on the hit '60s song as a promotional single from their live album Live in Japan – also enjoyed a little US chart action. Two decades later, British dance-pop dynamo Sonia offered an electronic pop reimagining of the song via the fifth and final single from her debut album, Everybody Knows (1990), which reached number 18 in the UK.
