According to the Guinness Book of World Records, “Yesterday” is the most covered pop song of all time. Although credited as a Lennon/McCartney composition, Paul McCartney wrote the song himself and is the only Beatle to play on the recording. The melody came to him so easily that it was only after he played it for several musician friends that he was convinced it wasn’t a song he had heard somewhere before. The lyrics, which deal with sadness and regret following a breakup, took about two weeks to finish. While working on the lyrics, the singer used a substitute lyric titled “Scrambled Eggs” with the opening verse “"Scrambled eggs / Oh my baby how I love your legs / Not as much as I love scrambled eggs.” While a guest on The Howard Stern Show. the singer revealed he still has the original envelope with his handwritten lyrics on the back. The song was so unlike anything The Beatles had recorded before that producer George Martin suggested it could be released as a Paul McCartney solo record but that idea was shot down by their manager Brian Epstein. Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Eva Cassidy, and Marvin Gaye have all covered this beautiful ballad. The backing track for"Yesterday" is available as an instrumental.
