The Beach Boys affirmed their seat on the hot-rod music throne with “Shut Down,” a twelve-bar blues rush included on their breakthrough 1963 album Surfin' U.S.A.—which set the surf music wheels in motion—and also featured on their 1963 LP Little Deuce Coupe. Littered with classic car references, the song depicts a speed-powered drag race between a Stock 413 Dodge Dart and a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray: "Two cool shorts standing side by side". Written by Brian Wilson and Roger Christian, "Shut Down" was released as the B-side of the indelible Beach Boys' surf single "Surfin' U.S.A." in 1963 and reached number 23 in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 34 in the UK. The hit song also seemed to inspire the name of their 1964 album Shut Down, Vol. 2, which featured an instrumental surfy wipeout called "Shut Down, Vol. 2" and a cover of Richard Berry's R&B standard "Louie Louie".
