Weighted down with broken-hearted soul, this melancholic country ballad was written by The Band's lead guitarist and songwriter Robbie Robertson and sung by Rick Danko. First released by the group on their sixth studio album Northern Lights – Southern Cross, "It Makes No Difference" takes a devastating look at the end of a relationship. "It makes no difference where I turn / I can't get over you and the flame still burns / It makes no difference, night or day," he sings. He's so depressed that he can't leave the house: "And the sun don't shine anymore / And the rains fall down on my door." A new level of poignancy was afforded to "It Makes No Difference" when it was performed alongside two other tracks from Northern Lights – Southern Cross ("Ophelia" and "Acadian Driftwood") at the band's iconic 1976 performance the Last Waltz, billed as the group's "farewell concert" and later made into a fabled documentary filmed by Martin Scorsese.
