The B-52's opened their self-titled debut LP with a largely instrumental transmission from another planet. Following a long, winding intro, "Planet Claire" – which is rooted in Duane Eddy's 1960 "Peter Gunn" instrumental guitar hit – sets out the band's sci-fi, B-movie themed stall, alluding to retro cars ("Plymouth Satellite") and a place with red trees and pink air. "Some say she's from Mars / Or one of the seven stars / That shine after 3:30 in the morning," sing-speaks vocalist Fred Schneider over a soundscape constructed by the band's late guitarist, Ricky Wilson, who tragically died of AIDS in 1985. Kate Pierson chimes in with otherworldly vocal coos while the 3:30 mirror hour reference nods to a spiritually powerful time. "Planet Claire" was among the tracks that helped to seal The B-52's fate as an iconic and incomparable new wave album, packed full of vivid imagery and highly danceable moments.
