The popularity of American R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass reached an all-time during the late 1970s/early 1980s. After rising to fame with the vocal group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and delivering three consecutive platinum-selling albums for the Philadelphia International label—Teddy Pendergrass (1977), Life Is a Song Worth Singing (1978), and Teddy (1979)—the South Carolina native seemed unstoppable. Decidedly mellower than his previous releases, his fourth album TP arrived in 1980 and was another hit for the singer, peaking at Number 14 on the Billboard 200 and at Number 3 on the US R&B charts. The album yielded the Top 10 singles "Love T.K.O." and the Ken Hirsch/Ron Miller original "Can't We Try," a heartbreaking soul ballad about a man reflecting on the end of a romantic relationship. Released on June 12, 1980, as the album's lead single, "Can't We Try" reached Number 3 on the R&B charts and was later featured in the soundtrack of the musical comedy Roadie.
