Taylor Swift has come a long way from the wholesome, clean-cut days of her first self-titled album and "Vigilante Shit," with its expletive-fuelled title and cold-hearted narrative, seems to encapsulate this metamorphosis. Over chest-rattling low-end, a nod to trap, and sultry sing-speak about steely revenge ("Draw the cat eye sharp enough to kill a man / You did some bad things, but I'm the worst of them / Sometimes I wonder which one'll be your last lie / They say looks can kill and I might try"), the sharp, synth-powered track mines some of the darker subject-matter on the star's tenth studio album Midnights (2022). It's not clear who the lyrics of "Vigilante Shit" refer to exactly, but the rumour mill has thrown up mega-manager Scooter Braun, who bought the masters for Taylor Swift’s pre-2019 catalogue as part of his deal to acquire her former record label Big Machine and who she has previously described as an “incessant, manipulative bully".
