ATWA,” which stands for “Air, Trees, Water, and Animals"—a reference to Charles Manson's environmental movement of the same name that intended to promote harmony through nature—was formed from Serj Tankian's fascination with the notorious criminal. With its despondent lyrics (“Hey you, see me, pictures crazy / All the world I’ve seen before me passing by”) and relatively sharp yet uncompromising arrangement, ATWA is one of the more clear-cut moments on System of a Down's off-the-wall second album, Toxicity, which shot to the top of the American and Canadian charts in 2001, the week before 9/11, and eventually achieved 3x multi-platinum certification in the United States. As well as spawning the band's signature song in "Chop Suey!", which earned them their first Grammy nomination in 2002 for Best Metal Performance, the album is considered a high-water mark in contemporary metal history.
