“The Things That I Used to Do” is a blues standard and, as such, has been played by a large number of performers over the years. Originally written by New Orleans blues guitar legend Eddie Jones (also known as Guitar Slim), the song became one of the biggest hits in the history of its record label. But it’s hard to think of a more iconic performance than that of legendary singer-songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire Stevie Ray Vaughan. In 1984, Stevie Ray Vaughan recorded “The Things That I Used to Do” as part of his second studio album Couldn’t Stand the Weather, where he infused the song with his own brand of blistering guitar. Produced by Stevie Ray Vaughan himself along with his backing band Double Trouble, Richard Mullen, and Jim Capfer, their version of the song became an immediate favorite among fans. And even though it wasn’t released as a single, it started being played on the radio. The album Couldn’t Stand the Weather peaked at Number 31 on the US Billboard 200 album chart.
