One of the ways that songs continue to stay relevant through the ages is through radical stylistic re-imaginings. In 2021, American DJ and record producer Steve Aoki decided to join forces with Israeli DJ/producer GATTÜSO, American DJ/producer Aukoustics, and Canadian vocalist MKLA to put a decidedly different spin on the 1991 R.E.M. hit “Losing My Religion.” Originally written by Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe from R.E.M., the tune was a largely acoustic, mandolin-led rock song about a troubled relationship. Steve Aoki’s version strips the song’s acoustic origins away and instead places it in a completely synthesized electronic setting, with MKLA’s vocal performance maintaining the grief and anguish of the original, while re-contextualizing the emotions beneath it with a lush bed of electronic beats. This electronic take on the song made it to Number 89 on the iTunes Chart.
