By 1975, jazz-rock mavericks Steely Dan had decided to cease all touring activities and become a studio-only band. This decision didn't sit well with drummer Jim Hodder and guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, both of whom quit the group shortly after, leaving the duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker in complete creative control of the band. Recorded between November 1974 and January 1975, their fourth studio album Katy Lied took their cerebral jazz-influenced sound even further with the help of several session musicians. The album produced the singles "Black Friday" and "Bad Sneakers," which featured the slow-burning blues jam "Chain Lightning" as its B-side. Written by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, "Chain Lightning" is an open critique of herd mentality and features a lengthy solo from guitarist Rick Derringer. Katy Lied, its parent album, reached Number 13 on both the US and UK pop charts.
