Soundgarden were one of the first of Seattle's storied grunge bands to sign to a major label, inking a deal with A&M Records in 1989, notably off the back of their Grammy-nominated debut LP, Ultramega OK. Released in September 1989, their second studio album, Louder Than Love, marked this union while by their third album they had begun to make serious moves on the Billboard 200 chart, with singles "Outshined" and "Rusty Cage" helping to push the LP to number 39. However, it was with third LP Superunknown that they really hit the heights of commercial and critical success. Released in 1994, Superunknown was predominantly written by the band's late frontman Chris Cornell, whose gut-wrenching penmanship combined with their stoner-rock sound proved a winning concoction; Superunknown was nominated for Best Rock Album at the 1995 Grammy Awards. The second track on the album, "My Wave" was inspired by 1979 tune "My Beach" by Malibu's Surf Punks but is less about sun, sea and surf and more about "Hate, if you want to hate".
