Fashioned from white-hot organ, sparse guitar and flashes of horns – with Solomon Burke's powerful voice erupting into a storm of emotion – this slow-burning blues gem from the late US preacher and soul pioneer was featured on his 1968 album, I Wish I Knew. A 12-bar blues and a classic love song ("Since I met you, baby, I'm a happy man / And I'm going to try / And please you every way I can"), "Since I Met You Baby" was originally written and recorded by pianist Ivory Joe Hunter in 1956 and became a standard, topping Billboard's Rhythm and Blues Records chart for three weeks in 1956. The track has been covered by numerous artists in addition to Solomon Burke over the years, including Wanda Jackson, The Spencer Davis Group, Sam Cooke, José Feliciano, Jerry Lee Lewis, Neil Young, Minday Carson – who enjoyed a chart version of the song in 1957 – and many more.
