"I'll Try Something New is a majestic Motown heartbreaker filled with emotion. As the inimitable Smokey Robinson inhales over sweeping strings, he sings of grand gestures ("I will build you a castle with a tower so high / It reaches the moon / I'll gather melodies from birdies that fly / And compose you a tune") while he voice conveys the sheer desperation of someone painfully in love. "And if that don’t do, I’ll try something new”, he promises in the song's unforgettable hook. "I'll Try Something New" was released by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles in 1962 as the title track to The Miracles' third Tamla (Motown) album and is a career-defining single that came early in the group's early trajectory, featuring a chorus led by Smokey Robinson's wife Claudette. I'll Try Something New is also significant as being one of the very few Miracles records to feature the complete original six-member group lineup on its cover.
