After lighting up the '90s with "Walkin' on the Sun" (1997), "All Star" (1999), and "Then The Morning Comes" (1999), Smash Mouth – originally composed of Steve Harwell (lead vocals), Kevin Coleman (drums), Greg Camp (guitar), and Paul De Lisle (bass) – toasted the start of the new millennium with a cover of The Monkees' "I'm a Believer" (2001). Originally written by Neil Diamond and recorded by the Monkees – who grabbed the Number 1 spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 for their original in 1966 – pop-rock heroes Smash Mouth added a heavier rock layer but stayed faithful to the song's original arrangement. They covered the song (along with "All Star") especially for the soundtrack to the 2001 movie Shrek, which saw Eddie Murphy playing the character of Donkey, and also performed the song in the movie. Smash Mouth went to Number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top 20 in New Zealand and Spain with their version of "I'm a Believer".
