American heavy metal band Slipknot has made a career for themselves out of combining aggression and melodicism into an accessible, yet still relentlessly heavy radio-ready package. “Unsainted,” the lead single for the group’s sixth studio album We Are Not Your Kind (2019), is a great example of this approach. The song combines production flourishes, such as the synthesizers in the intro and the use of a choir, with the band’s brand of distorted metal riffage and melodic chorus. With its rumbling drums and half-time breakdown, the song remains in Slipknot’s wheelhouse while also charting out new sonic space for the group. “Unsainted” was written by Shawn Crahan, Jim Root, and Corey Taylor. It was produced by Slipknot along with Greg Fidelman. The song made it to Number 4 on the US Billboard Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, as well as Number 2 on the UK Rock & Metal chart. The song was certified Gold in the United States for sales of over 500,000 copies.
