Sir Mix-a-Lot’s career is defined in popular consciousness by the 1992 mega-hit “Baby Got Back.” However, the American rapper has a deep catalog of songs featuring his unique blend of old-school hip-hop and comedy. In 1988, he released his debut album Swass, featuring singles such as “Posse on Broadway,” “Rippn,” and “Square Dance Rap.” The first song on the album, and thus the song that would officially kick off the Sir Mix-a-Lot discography, is “Buttermilk Biscuits (Keep on Square Dancin’)," a song that incorporates many of the elements of late-80s hip-hop: synthesized brass section, drum machines, an irreverent attitude towards life, and nonsensical lyrics about food. The song extolled the virtues of the titular buttermilk biscuits. “Buttermilk Biscuits (Keep on Square Dancin')" was written and produced by Sir Mix-a-Lot. Swass would go on to receive a platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America.
