"The Boxer" is a track from Simon & Garfunkel's critically acclaimed fifth album, Bridge over Troubled Water. It was written by Paul Simon and produced by the duo with Paul Halee. Released as a single on March 21, 1969, and later included in their 1970 album, the song combines autobiographical elements with biblical inspirations. Its lyrics offer a dire portrait of a young man struggling with poverty and loneliness after moving to New York City, later drawing parallels with the story of a boxer in its last verse. A folk-rock ballad, the song's intricate production demanded over 100 hours, featuring unique instruments like pedal steel guitar by Curly Chalker and bass harmonica by Charlie McCoy. Shortly after its release, "The Boxer" climbed to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking a successful follow-up to their hit single "Mrs. Robinson." Internationally, it saw Top 10 success in countries like the Netherlands, Austria, and Canada, among others.

I was surprised that all the intricate and layered guitar work that you hear in S&G's studio release of this song -
marytata 8 years agoWho at Karaoke-version decided it was a good idea to use the chorus only as the example of what the track sounds like. What does the verse sound like? You should have at least let us hear several seconds of that.
