Along with monster boogie smash "A Night to Remember" and "Friends," "There It Is" comprised the trilogy of hits on Shalamar's sixth album Friends; a tour de force of early 1980s R&B. Stretching vocalist Jeffrey Daniel's crystal-clear croon over a taut and funky groove, the group settled into shoulder-popping post-disco with the sizzling track, which employs nautical metaphors to depict the love between the song's protagonists ("And who could dream that we would sail into each other / Ooh girl, I never felt a wave of love so strong.") "There It Is" became Shalamar's highest-charting single in the UK, where it reached number five, and also went to to number six in Ireland. Released in 1982, Friends, which struck number six in the UK, was the last hurrah for Shalamar who parted ways the following year. Band member Jody Watley began a solo career shortly after, later earning the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1988.
