R&B/soul vocal quartet Shai's encounter with success came rather early in their career. After meeting on the campus of Howard University, the four-piece released their studio debut If I Ever Fall in Love in 1992, which reached Number 3 on the US R&B charts and received Platinum certification. This was largely thanks to its title track, a sensuous R&B ballad featuring lush vocal harmonies and sparse instrumentation, courtesy of producer Carl "Groove" Martin. Shortly after its release, "If I Ever Fall in Love" debuted at Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent eight consecutive weeks on that spot, only surpassed by Whitney Houston's massive hit single "I Will Always Love You." A stripped-down, a cappella version of the song was also included in Shai's debut full-length, showcasing their impressive vocal skills. In later years, "If I Ever Fall Fall in Love" was covered by the British boy band East 17 and singer Gabrielle which, surprisingly, also peaked at Number 2 on the UK charts.
