Canadian prog-rock band Rush had already had an impressive career by the time they recorded their 1982 album Signals. Co-produced by the band and longtime collaborator Terry Brown, Signals was the band’s ninth studio album and represented a considerable jump in the band’s sonic palette, expanding on their use of synthesizers and further electronic instrumentation. New World Man was the final addition to the album’s tracklist, as it was added with the express purpose of evening out the length of the two sides of the album’s cassette version. New World Man went on to become a hit single for the band, hitting Number 1 on the RPM national singles chart in Canada and peaking at Number 21 on the Billboard singles chart. The song paints a picture of a figure, the “new world man,” pushing constantly into the future with ambition and rebelling against the figures of the “old world.”
