"Moonchild" is the third track on Irish blues rock guitarist Rory Gallagher's 1976 sixth album Calling Card. It was released as a 7-inch single on the famed early hard rock label Chrysalis Records. Produced by Deep Purple/Rainbow bassist Roger Glover, "Moonchild" is not far removed from early heavy metal tracks, with its overdriven, technical electric guitar and thrashing drum beat. In the lyrics to "Moonchild," Rory Gallagher asks a sad woman to look at him with a smile, vowing to make her smile forever. The musician, who was originally a member of the band Taste, played several instruments besides guitar on the track, including harmonica, saxophone, and several stringed instruments such as mandolin and bass guitar. Despite not entering any official charts upon its release, "Moonchild" marked a new chapter in Rory Gallagher's career, one that found him getting closer and closer to hard rock on subsequent albums like 1978's Photo-Finish and 1979's Top Priority.
