Rod Stewart stepped into the muddy boots of a weary farmer (“Buffalo died in the frozen fields you know / Through the coldest winter in almost fourteen years,”) to pore over a loving and loyal relationship in this wistful country-folk roller (which is ultimately filled with disappointment): “I recall the night we knelt and prayed / Noticing your face was thin and pale / I found it hard to hide my tears / I felt ashamed I felt I'd let you down.” “Mandolin Wind” is illuminated by mandolin from Ray Jackson of British folkie favorites Lindisfarne and was the only track included on Rod Stewart’s 1971 album Every Picture Tells a Story, which was penned by the UK pop-rock stalwart, although he did co-write the title track with Ronnie Wood. The following year, “Mandolin Wind” was brought to life by The Everly Brothers on their album Stories We Could Tell, and in 1977 it was recorded by banjo innovator Earl Scruggs on his album Strike Anywhere.
